Coach Friend is one of only five coaches in the history of the Kansas State High School Activities Association to be inducted into their Hall of fame.  In his career he has touched many young men and this page is put together so we can express our feelings to Coach and so that others that may find this page can learn more about him.  If you are a former athlete or friend and would like to have your thoughts put on this site, please EMAIL ME and I will consider posting them.  Thanks, Pete Thomas

Here is some personal history on coach.  He was born in the late thirties in S.W. Kansas and went to High School at Burdett Kansas where he excelled in all three sports, football, basketball and track.  He then went to Dodge City Junior College where he again starred in those three sports.  From there he went to Northwestern Oklahoma State College in Alva where he played football and ran track.  After his college career ended he went to Cherokee, OK where he coached lady's basketball for one season. Recent update...

WHEN HE COACHED AT CHEROKEE, OKLAHOMA GIRLS BASKETBALL, HE REALLY TAUGHT AND COACHED GIRLS BASKETBALL 2 YEARS....(NOT JUST ONE YEAR)....THE ADMINISTRATION WAS IMPRESSED, AS IN YEAR TWO, HE TOOK THE GIRLS TO WINNING THEIR FIRST DISTRICT GAME BEFORE GETTING BEAT AT REGIONALS, BUT THEIR TEAM HAD NEVER MADE IT THAT FAR.

The next year he was the Junior High football coach in Cimarron, KS.  The next year he became the High School football coach helping Cimarron achieve it's first winning season in some years.
After six years at Cimarron Coach moved to Haysville where he was the assistant football coach and head track coach.
After a year at Campus High in Haysville as overall PE coordinator, coach took over the coaching job at Plainville, KS where in his twenty year stint as head coach took the Cardinals to two state championships along with many winning seasons.
He later coached three years at Stanton County High School in Johnson, KS and now resides with his wife Joan in Syracuse, KS where Joan is an administrator at the high school and Coach enjoys his retirement with Golf, keeping in touch with friends, former coaches and players as well as other activities.

Just an update. 6/27/2021. Coach is still in good health although he does not golf nearly as much. His Beautiful wife Joan battled cancer and passed away a few years ago. She was of course head cheerleader in Cimarron. Cimarron has homecoming only every three years and she was Homecoming Queen her senior year. She was a beautiful lady until her deatch. Joan had a long career in teaching and as a school administrator.

HIGHLIGHTS FOR JOAN MIGHT BE 42 TOTAL YEARS AS AN EDUCATOR....22 YEARS IN CLASSROOM, 11 YEARS AS PRINCIPAL AT PALCO ROOSTERS, THEN 9 YEARS AS SUPERINTENDENT AT SYRACUSE KANSAS BEFORE SHE RETIRED AND THEY MOVED BACK TO PLAINVILLE.
