More info from Larry
Jantz.
After High School Coach went to Dodge City
Community
College
on a basketball scholarship, but participated in football, basketball, and
track. He participated two years and lettered both years in all three
sports. As a sophomore at DCCC, he earned All-American status as a
halfback. His coach at that time was George
Parkhurst. He played against the likes of Gene Keady (hometown of
Larned, and a star player then on Garden City’s
sports teams, and they grew up some 30 miles from each other). Larry was
fortunate to catch Coach Keady in his Purdue Boilermaker’s basketball office
and alerted him onto the Hall Of Fame honor for Coach Friend. He told him
over the phone, that “We could never catch the quick little rascal”, and was
so happy to know about this Very Worthy Honor for Coach Friend. He only
wished he had time to fly or drive out to
Western
Kansas
and sit down and just visit with Coach and share their many memories. |
