12/31/2011 New Year’s: Auld Lang Syne I have often thought of New Years, as a new beginning, a fresh start to get things right this new year. I think of it more seriously, as I get older, and if I have had a challenging year, especially. I then thought, what does the old New Year’s song really mean, or what are all the words, for that matter? SO I did a bit of research, on the internet. You can find most anything there, to educate yourself. These are the actual words:
Should old
acquaintance be forgot,
And surely you’ll
buy your pint cup!
We two have run about the slopes,
We two have paddled
in the stream,
And there’s a hand
my trusty friend! Then I wondered what does “Auld Lang Syne”, really mean, so again I looked up the history. This is what I discovered, "old long since", or more idiomatically, "long long ago", "days gone by" or "old times". Consequently "For auld lang syne", as it appears in the first line of the chorus, is loosely translated as "for (the sake of) old times". It is an old Scots song from 1788, used around the world, not just exclusively, in English. (Wikipedia) Now it really starts to make some sense, as I read the words, and found the meaning. It is about times and friends that may have been forgotten. You can read the rest of the lyrics, and know the meaning, for yourself. I guess this year it has a meaning that our old friends and old times have been really resurrected, through our new Cimarron page, and my old grade school page. I rarely do any New Year’s resolutions, as it seems pointless, as I and many others rarely keep those resolutions. For me this year, it is thankfulness of old acquaintances and the memories we share. Most importantly for me personally, a new beginning, a fresh start to get it right this coming year. To be a better mother, a better person, a better Christian, and a changed person, but still not lose me. I have been in somewhat of a metamorphosis, these past few years, as my life has changed dramatically. My friends, my family, my job, my health, and my financial circumstances, all changed. With those life changes, mostly out of my control, I must adapt and change to those new circumstances. Being a single mom, having to always make my own way, alone; I had been through my hard times and changes, but none so profound, as now. At first, I resisted. I just wanted my life back the way it used to be. However, that way of thinking just made me feel like a failure, no purpose, and depression. I needed help in changing me, and to adapt to my new circumstances. Then I sought out others for advice, but that does not work, as others have their own issues to face. I am still in the state of metamorphosis, I am learning to change, and adapt. Now you may ask, “How did you do it, who or what helped you?” As I said earlier, it was mostly out of my control. So I went to the source, the ONE in control, and it was God. I had been a Christian many years, and read the bible many times. Now I was truly in search of God’s answers, His plan, and His purpose for my life. Praying, reading the Bible, with hunger, and seeking God, every day, for everything. That was my answer, and it still is. My circumstances have not really changed, but how I think, and how I respond, has. That is how I have changed. I continue on my path of change, for changing your life, at age 50, takes a lot of time. However, I am determined to make those changes. This will be a NEW YEAR for me this coming year, more than ever before. I am finally able to be thankful, for the trials and storms in my life. I have truly learned who and what, is the most important in my life. What will be your change? As life’s circumstances never stay the same. How will you do it, this New Year? As life and time marches on, stopping for no one. Leanne If you cannot reach me by clicking on the "COMMENTS" link, please email me at cimarronkansas@yahoo.com with "NEW YEAR" in the subject line. |

I hope to see more of your essays. Jeffro |
Leanne. Well written with thought provoking insights from your research and studies. I think we all can relate to many of the life stories to which you refer. Thank you for sharing. Russell Hefner. |
